First signing of 2009

First, I gotta say that I did not get in to see Underworld: Rise of the Lycans tonight. We arrived at the theater an hour and 10 minutes before the show started, but it was already packed and lined up real deep outside. That was a real bummer, but I’m glad to see so many people turned out for a werewolf movie. We will swing the tide against the dirt-sleepers.

Duvy of Darkfaery Subculture Magazine has offered me some space at her table at Scarlet’s Mid-Winter Renassiance Festival this weekend. Althought it’s in downtown OKC, I have not been to this particular festival before, so I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be taking a stack of flyers and — get this — the Darkfaery Girls will be passing them out and showing people where to find me. So, yes, I will sit at a table and beautiful women in black leather, fishnets, etc. will bring me people who want to be separated from their money. I could soooo get used to that.

There is an $11 charge to get in, but I’m assured that it’s a great festival and worth the money. And yes, it is all indoors, so you don’t have to worry about the crazy Oklahoma weather. Come on out a visit me!

Little Graveyard ineligible for 2008 Stoker

Many, many thanks to everyone who recommended my novelette Little Graveyard on the Prairie for the Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker Award. You have no idea how pleased I was to see this particular work climbing up the ranks of the Long Fiction category.

However, because it is just now shipping from the publisher, the folks at HWA have taken it off the 2008 rec sheet. It will be eligible for the 2009 award despite the 2008 copyright notice. This is good, as it will allow time for more people to read it and, hopefully, deem it worthy.

I should point out there are still copies available for sale from the publisher. You can also buy it at Horror Mall, if you prefer.

Ulrik is still on the list, though waaaaay down in the Novel category. Also, to my surprise, the short story “Okie Werewolf Seeks Love” has a couple of recommendations. If you’re an HWA member and want to read one or both, just drop me a line.

OKC Underworld Party

The Underworld: Rise of the Lycans party hosted by Darkfaery Subculture Magazine at Skybar Ultralounge was last night. Vampires and werewolves and yuppies, oh my!

I am not much of a social animal and there were only a few people there I know, so I mostly sat at the bar with my wife and watched the proceedings. There was Tarot reading by Boobzilla, belly dancing and … some other dancing that involved a very tall drag queen. I wasn’t able to see all that one, but it involved a box, a woman, and a rope, or something like a rope, anyway. The people who could see it sure enjoyed it. Afterward, the woman had to roll the “dead” drag queen off the floor.

I did meet some very interesting people. Most notable was a reverend whose name I have forgotten part of. I’m bad with names. Hopefully that’ll come back to me soon. Needless to say, he was not a Pat Robertson kind of preacher. He introduced me to a young journalist named Fire, who seemed really smart. Of course, Duvy and Zenon were there, and vampire author Jackson Compton.

There were drawings for a complete set of The Werewolf Saga books and for a stack of Jackson’s books. Caleb, the guy who won my books, had come to OKC from Tulsa for the party, so it was cool he got something for his trip.

We left at about 12:30. On the way down a trio of yuppies were in the elevator with us, bitching about the “freaks” that took over their techno bar.

The outing certainly proved that I’m not really part of the subculture. What is so cool about the subculture, though, is that they’ll accept you if you accept them.

Oh yeah. The movie. I’m still wanting to see it, of course. There were lots of posters, shirts and hats given away.  Hopes are still high that it’ll be really good.

Hollywood Werewolves in OKC

My friend Duvy over at Darkfaery Subculture Magazine has teamed up with Sony to throw a party to celebrate the release of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. The party will start at 9 p.,m. at Skyy Bar in downtown Oklahoma City on Jan. 16. They’ll have all kinds of stuff going on, as you can see from this poster. Duvy has put me on the VIP list, and she’ll be giving away a complete signed set of The Werewolf Saga books that I donated. You do have to be 21 to get in, but if you are and you’re in the area, I encourage you to come down. She’ll also be giving away passes to an early screening of the movie, T-shirts, hats and more.

Come on. We need to scare the yuppies out of Skyy Bar. There will be reps from Sony there and we need to show them that Oklahoma City and Darkfaery are viable outlets for this kind of stuff.
