Expensive weekend

Just when you think there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, you find out you’re sharing space with a large, hungry firefly. Or something like that. We were planning to do some home repairs with the coming income tax refund. But then the refrigerator decided it was time to go to that great kitchen in the sky. I shouldn’t complain. In almost 23 years of marriage, this is the first time we’ve had to buy a new refrigerator. Usually, Kim’s parents buy a new one and give us their old one. Oh well. It’s only money.

Something that turned out to be free was the movie portion of last night’s date night. After dinner at Santa Fe Cattle Co. (I love that redneck tea!) we went to the dollar theater to watch “The Mist.” The theater is under new management and everyone got in free last night. Woohoo! As to the movie, I loved it. Kim didn’t like it, until the unexpected ending. I thought the whole thing was well acted, well paced and had good, believable dialogue. (Granted, I may have been comparing it to the horrid made-for-SciFi flick I’d seen that morning, but …) Anyway, I thought it was really, really good. I was so glad to see a horror movie that wasn’t about a group of teens being stripped and menaced! And the ending … so different than the novella, but so powerful.

In an unusual turn of events, the theater was pretty full. Yeah, maybe because it was free movie night. Go figure. The point is, I usually see movies at the dollar theater with only a handful of other viewers. This time, we were “treated” to all the comments from the audience as the plot unfolded. People are strange. And loud.

I’m getting a dirty look, so I guess I should help fold this pile of laundry.
